Utilities

Mobile Phone
There is a choice of mobile phone providers, including Du, Etisalat, and Virgin. Mobile phones are bought at full price and contracts do not include handsets so many expats choose a pay-as-you-go SIM when they arrive and this suits them well. There are different options with regards to topping up your phone and there isn’t much difference between the services.

Data can be topped up separately if you find yourself using lots of mobile internet apps whilst you are out and about, or you can choose to top up call credit.

TOP TIP: Free messaging apps like Whatsapp are the way forward! Everyone uses WhatsApp in Dubai.

Visit the DU, Etisalat, and Virgin pages for more information about the packages available.

TV, landline, and Internet
TV and Internet service is entirely dependent on where you live. A building or complex is serviced by only one of two providers, therefore the only choice you will get is the package that the provider offers.

Although the choice is limited, the packages available are very similar in content and price.

Surprisingly, broadband in Dubai isn’t the most reliable so dependent on your expected usage you may prefer to choose a larger package than you would usually opt for in the UK.

Visit the DU and Etisalat pages for more information about packages available for both TV and Internet.

Utilities – Electricity and Water
DEWA (Dubai Electric and Water Authority)

If you take accommodation with Kings’ then the DEWA information on this page might not be as relevant for you.

If you opt to take the housing allowance, you will need to contact DEWA once a property is secured to ensure that you are connected.

DEWA covers both your water and electricity bill. It is billed monthly and you are usually expected to settle the bill within a week of receiving it – it’s a quick turn around! There are no Direct Debits in Dubai so bills need to settled in person or online each month.
